Counting continues for mackay regional council
The city's chief executive officer has declared victory in the battle against councillors trying to raise taxes by collecting more of the public money.
Councillor John Mackay said Monday that a court injunction issued by the courts against him blocking another attempt to take council money was vindication that the "tax war" should have ended with his defeat.
The council's executive officer said it did not intend to go after the council's general fund, which receives about half of council money, and that a judge had set aside an injunction that barred it from raising it.
Council has been in a battle since October for the council's general fund, which is used to pay for administration, programs and capital projects.
The council is to hold a conference at the end of May to discuss the matter.
He said he still felt the "tax war" would last and that all of the costs would probably increase, and said he would seek support and contributions for an additional $2 million this summer from local businesses and others to pay for "a reasonable" budget.
The council has also been fighting on issues, such as health care and property taxes, until the judge's ruling, Mackay said.
He said the city council would continue to consider what to do to help residents struggling.
